

Martha “George” McLaughlin Simmons, a resident of Mountain Brook, AL, passed away on November 28, 2014. Mrs. Simmons was born in Birmingham, AL on May 8th. She attended Birmingham Southern College prior to marrying her husband of 67 years, Albert Wendall Simmons. She was a member of Canterbury Methodist Church, and also enjoyed the volunteer work she did for Goodwill. Mrs. Simmons served on the Symphony Volunteer Council, and was a member of the Brookwood Forest Garden Club. She loved fishing and boating in Long Boat Key, FL with family and friends, and proudly shared her birthday with her two children, Tom and Sue. Mrs. Simmons is preceded in death by her parents, Pearl Hutto McLaughlin and Thomas Rosser McLaughlin; her daughter, Sue Simmons Estes; grandsons James Hansford Estes and Brian Wendall Estes; cousins, Carroll P. Duncan and Verna Duncan. She is survived by her husband, Albert Wendall Simmons; her son, Scott Thomas Wendall Simmons; grandchildren, Martha Sue Estes, Allison Simmons Armisted (Cole Webster), Martha Brooke Simmons Hipp (Brian), and Katherine Scott Simmons; great grandchildren, William Clay Armistead, Austin Blake Armistead, Grayson Ware Hipp, and Jackson Clay Hipp; and many special cousins and friends including Karen Foster, Vicki Lynn Kamrath, Dawn Morris Simmons, and Janice and Les Thomas. The family will receive friends December 2nd from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Elmwood Chapel, with graveside service immediately following at Elmwood Cemetery. Reverend Bill Morgan will be officiating, and active pallbearers are Jason Crook, Brian Hipp, Les Thomas, and Cole Webster. Honorary pallbearers are Austin Blake Armistead and William Clay Armistead.
