Martha Chambers Slaughter was born in Columbus, Georgia on June 21, 1918, and passed peacefully at her home in Birmingham, Alabama on Tuesday, July 7, 2020. Martha was the second of three daughters born to Alice and Robert Chambers. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Alice Chambers McKenney and Eunice Chambers Trawick.
Martha married Guy L. Seymour in June 1939 and they welcomed a daughter, Diane, in 1942. Guy died in 1965, and then in 1976 Martha married Dow Perry Slaughter. Martha was preceded in death by her husbands and her daughter, Dr. Diane Seymour Brown.
Martha earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Alabama in 1939. She worked in various business ventures with her first husband, Guy L. Seymour.
Martha was member of Canterbury United Methodist Church where she was a member of the John Wesley Sunday School Class. She was an avid reader, and she loved to play bridge, go to movies, and watch Alabama football games. She was loved for her keen intellect and sense of humor. Martha is survived by nieces and a nephew. A private graveside service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery.
