Mary Frances Azbik

Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, she was a lifelong, devoted member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. She attended Phillips High School, where she was an exceptional athlete who played every sport offered to women and proudly served as captain of the cheerleading squad. Professionally, she worked as a dental hygienist and as a bookkeeper for Collateral Mortgage and Jefferson Memorial before transitioning into her most cherished role as a dedicated mom and housewife.

Mary Frances found her greatest joy in cooking for and hosting others. She was widely known for her incredible homemade meals, including her signature spaghetti and meatballs, chicken and dumplings, chicken noodle soup, homemade pies, stuffed artichokes, and famous fried chicken. Her home was always filled with warmth and hospitality, whether she was hosting backyard barbecues or welcoming dozens of loved ones every Christmas Eve for Italian sausage and homemade eggnog. Beyond her kitchen, she loved spending time with her family and friends, and she was an enthusiastic fan of Alabama football and softball.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband and dance partner of 67 years, Joe Azbik Jr., as well as her parents, Fred and Frances Rietta. She is survived by her four children, Fred Azbik (Diane), Wayne Azbik (Connie), Joey Azbik (Ginger), and Debbie Azbik Chancellor (Barry). She was Nina to her six grandchildren, Tony Azbik (Anamarija), Leah Chancellor Stephens (Jakob), Phillip Azbik (Haylee), Ryan Chancellor (Megan), Samantha Azbik (Logan), and Nathan Azbik; and four great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her sister, Freda Rietta Hamer (Norris); and a large, loving extended family.

Mary Frances’ funeral will be held on Wednesday, July 29, at Elmwood Chapel. Visitation will take place from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, with the funeral service beginning immediately at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in her honor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
