Mary Elizabeth Smith (Nan), age 72, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away on Friday, April 13, 2018. Mary, affectionately known by her grandchildren as "Nan", was born September 3, 1945 in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Nellie Ruth Purser and Clarence Purser.
Mary is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Fred C. Smith; son, Wade McDaniel; daughter, Tara Smith; brother, Cotton Purser; sister, Carolyn Hyde; grandchildren Brittany Daniels, Tayla Smith, and Andrew Nevin; 5 great-grandchildren Khloe Daniels, Jayden Thomas, Colby Thomas, Landen Thomas, and Kylee Thomas; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her brother Junior Purser and her sister Delores Phillips.
Nan loved to shop, particularly at thrift stores. She worked as a hairdresser for many years and was skilled in her profession. Nan and Fred were part of the "Magic City Boppers," a dance club, for 15 years. They enjoyed their annual summer trip to Panama City, FL with the club where they would dance and have a great time with friends. Nan was a people-person and loved to socialize. She enjoyed spending time with her family and having family gatherings and dinners where she could cook for everyone. She will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 18 at 1:00 pm at Pawnee Baptist Church, 2370 Hewitt Drive, Pawnee, AL 35217. Service will follow at 2:00 pm. Flowers can be sent to the church.
