Melvin Thomas Gay, born April 28, 1933 and passed into the arms of his heavenly Father and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, July 22, 2020. Melvin was born and raised in Walker County, Alabama. After graduating from Curry High School, he attended Florence State College after earning a football scholarship. His education was interrupted while he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After working for U.S. Steel in Birmingham for 30years, he retired and moved back to his home in Thach, Alabama, and worked in the Maintenance Department of Jasper City Schools until he retired again ten years later. Melvin loved his school job. He was known to be cantankerous, but he was loved by many. His favorite thing about working with the schools was visiting the lunchroom ladies who always had a hot roll, or peanut butter cookie for him. He was devoted to his employer and had great respect for the superintendent and staff, and the principals he worked for. Principal Mike Morton was a wonderful friend. Melvin had a large extended family and lifelong friends in Jefferson, Walker, and Winston counties and never hesitated to tell people how blessed he was. He leaves behind his daughters Rebeccah Sturgeon (Joey) and Deborah Wood (Allen); grandchildren, Melissa Peeples (Lee), Matthew Morgan (Alison), Amanda Pair (Allen), Dayton Miller, and Haven Miller; six great grandchildren; and his brother Doyle Gay; and a sister, Elene Lott. Melvin was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Joan Gay; and his son, Jeff Gay. Melvin’s family offer their sincere appreciation to Dr. Bentley, Michelle, Becky, Daniel, and staff of Walker Baptist Senior Care for their compassion and care during the last few weeks, and Compassus Hospice in Birmingham for their assistance in his last days. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, and in consideration of the health and safety of our family and friends, no service will be held at this time.
