Mel was born on August 5, 1931 in Fort Worth, Texas and grew up in Galveston, Texas where he received his formal education. Later, Mel attended South-Eastern Bible Institute in Birmingham, Alabama. He enjoyed his studies immensely and graduated twice from the institution. He served as an ordained deacon at Huffman Baptist Church for several years. Currently, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Trussville. He also served in the United States Army for six years. One of Mel's greatest joys was studying God's word and teaching Sunday School (small group) and Bible Study groups.
Mel was preceded in death by his father and mother; his first wife of fifty-one years, and her two sweet and lovely children, whom Mel assisted in raising; the children knew him as "Dad".
Mel is survived by his wife of twelve and a half years, Faye; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; nine great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The family extends great appreciation to his loving team of doctors, nurses, care-givers, Church members and friends.
A visitation for Mel will be held Monday, November 20, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Ridout's Trussville Chapel, 1500 Gadsden Hwy, Birmingham, AL 35235, followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00 AM.
