Merldene Welch Karrh

Merldene Welch Karrh was born April 11, 1926 in Bangs,Tx. She grew up in Bessemer AL, a graduate of Bessemer High and attended Birmingham Southern. She married Calvin (Cal) Karrh of Bessemer in August of 1946. Married for 57 years, they had 4 children together. She passed away at age 99 on Jan 20th 2026 after a short illness surrounded by her family.

Her working career was centered around Federal Civil Service, and the medical field. She obtained an Associate Degree in Nursing and retired as a Skilled Nursing Facility Licensed Director/Administrator. Always looking for a new challenge she enjoyed learning, teaching and research. And, known to always find time and energy to help others.

She was proud to serve as President of the Redstone International Toastmistress Club and the Mountain Woods Garden Club. Other interest included singing as a member of the New Orleans Sweet Adeline’s. She also was a faithful member of Vestavia Hills Church of Christ.

She is preceded in death by her beloved Husband James Calvin Karrh, Parents Luther Dennis Welch and Alice Mae Davis Welch, and her son, Randy Karrh, and Grandson Riley Karrh.

She is survived by her Daughter Jackie O. Mathews (Art), Son, Jerry Karrh RN, (Melissa, CRNP), Grand Children: James Mathews RN, Jenny Armstrong RN (David), Jaxon Karrh (Tashee Brown) and Slaten Karrh (Tori). Great Grandchildren Nathan Armstrong (Braiden), Zane Armstrong, Jay Armstrong, Ozzy Karrh, Great-Great Grandchildren: River Gable and Ellie Claire Armstrong.

Visitation for friends will be on Friday, January 23, 2026 at 10:00 AM, followed by Funeral services at 11:00 AM. To be officiated by John Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel. Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery.
