Michael Haffner, age 66, died peacefully on Saturday, September 21st, with his wife and closest friends by his side, in Chandler Health and Rehabilitation, Alabaster, Alabama. A resident of Calera, Alabama, he was born in Birmingham, Alabama, to William Richard Haffner and Ruby (Watwood) Haffner, and was the youngest of four children.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, and by his brother, William Richard Haffner, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Cathy (Harper) Haffner of Calera; his sisters
Vina Morros (Constantine) of Birmingham; Pat McDonald of Marietta, Georgia; his sister-in-law, Patsy Haffner of Foley, Alabama; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Michael graduated from Ramsey High School, where he excelled as a member of the school's track team. Upon receiving a track scholarship to the University of Alabama, he entered college and lettered in track competition there.
A tragic accident near the end of his senior year prevented Michael from fulfilling his dream of becoming a full time track coach. Instead, he pursued training as a bench jeweler and for a few years owned and operated Michael's Creations in Homewood, Alabama.
Michael's fondest memories were those of his years on his high school and college track teams. He was proud of his life-long affiliation with the University of Alabama 'A' Club, and he cherished throughout his life the friendships from those years.
A graveside service is scheduled for family and friends at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 25, 2013, Block 44 at Elmwood Cemetery, Birmingham.
May his memory be eternal
