
Millard Joe Crump Age 89, of Birmingham, passed away on April 23, 2016. Joe was the third son born to Fred and Mary Ann Crump in Crossville, Alabama. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Nathalia Witherington Crump, as well as two daughters, Mona Crump Spurlin (Cliff) and Lisa Crump Chesser (Dan); and four grandchildren, Renee Spurlin Kornegay (Jason), Darryl Pierce Chesser (Amanda), Tyler Daniel Chesser and Heath Joseph Chesser; and a great granddaughter, Stella Marie Kornegay.
His father was a carpenter and because of the depression he had to move about the state to find work. The family left Crossville when Joe was nine, thus requiring him to attend schools in Crossville, Guntesville, Gadsden, Etowah County High, and finally at age 15, family moved to Birmingham, where he lived the rest of his life. He graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1944.
Joe served in the Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Baltimore Maryland and the Philippine Islands. Joe graduated from Birmingham -Southern College in 1951. He belonged to many charities alongside his church. He loved his church, Huffman United Methodist Church.
Joe started to work at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama in 1951, where he worked tirelessly for 35 years. After retirement, Joe spent over 15 years planning and escorting 43 tours for his church and traveled all over the world. Joe also was a member of the Trussville Noon Rotary Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Dwight and Fred Leonard.
He spent his final days at home under New Beacon Hospice.
The Family is grateful for the tender care and support from the staff of New Beacon Hospice and his daily sitters; Candice Cruse, Jill Davis, April McGuire and Brenda Stuart. Joe is also grateful for the 24 hour care his loving wife gave him.
The family will receive friends on April 26, 2016 at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel, 10-11 am followed by a service in celebration of his life at 11am. Burial will be in Jefferson Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made to Huffman United Methodist Church.
