Morland Landis Flegel Jr. was born on January 24, 1952, in Anniston, Alabama, to Morland and Marjorie Elizabeth (Moore) Flegel. Landis grew up in Ashland, Alabama, alongside his sister, the late Madelin Flegel Sellers, and his younger brother, Mike Flegel of Lincoln, Alabama.
Landis was an athlete at heart and played all sports throughout his youth. He graduated from Clay County High School in 1969 and earned his Eagle Scout Award while there. He went on to attend Auburn University, where he earned a degree in Education and was an active member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. It was at Auburn that he met Judy Gerst, who would become his wife. They married in August 1973 and eventually made their home in Judy’s hometown of Albany, Georgia.
Together, Landis and Judy had the pride and joy of their lives, their son, Matthew Corey Flegel. Landis spent 40 years working in the plumbing wholesale business, a career that took him throughout the Southeast. No matter how busy work kept him, however, he always made time for one of the things he loved most: coaching Little League and being involved in the lives of young athletes.
In 2015, Landis married Lyndon Wall Thomas. They made their home in Lincoln, Alabama, where Landis kept busy with the projects he loved, both inside and outside the house. Most recently, he built the home where he and Lyndy lived together—a testament to his determination, skill, and love of creating things with his own hands.
Landis was an avid fisherman and golfer, a voracious reader, a proud Parrothead, and a die-hard Auburn fan. He was also a longtime pass holder for Alabama’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail and enjoyed every opportunity to spend time outdoors, on the golf course, or simply working on his latest project. Above all, Landis was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who found great joy in the people and activities he loved.
Landis was preceded in death by his parents, Morland and Marjorie; his sister, Madelin; and his first wife, Judy.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lyndy Flegel; his son, Corey Flegel (Angie); and his step-sons, Brian Y. Thomas (Ashley) and Donald “Matt” Thomas (Anny), along with grandchildren, Charlie Flegel, Madison T. Thomas, Hannah Thomas, Will Thomas, & Emma Thomas, and J.T. Thomas. He also leaves behind his brother, Mike, as well as many extended family members and dear friends.
Landis will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His memory will live on through his family, the many lives he touched, and the countless stories and memories he leaves behind.
Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Wetumpka, Alabama, on Saturday, September 26. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. CT, followed by the funeral service at 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Landis’ name to the Lincoln Public Library. Checks may be mailed to:
