My mother, Patricia Joan Waine Moreno was born in the steel town of Pratt City, Alabama on February 17, 1944. She passed away on April 5, 2022, in Birmingham, Alabama in the presence of her son, John Moreno, daughter in-law, Donna Moreno, granddaughter, Amanda Moreno, and a second son and best friend to John for over 51 years, Scott Mims.
My mother had many titles in her life: daughter, sister, Kelly Girl temp, mother, baseball mom, football mom, cheerleading sponsor, Vice President of Advertising and Marketing, aunt, and her crowning achievement and that she was most proud of, Grammy. Joan Waine was a very special and hard-working person. She had wonderful parents and was shown love and discipline every day. Not always did she like the discipline.
She met the love of her life, my father, John Moreno, when her sister, Jerri was late for a date, and they went out instead. John and Joan were married on her 18th birthday, in 1962.
I was born February the 2nd 1966 and was well loved and spoiled and tormented by many until my daughter Amanda came along November 22nd, 1995.
In my time, my mother never missed a baseball or football game that her son ever played; and carried that on with her granddaughter’s games as well.
Joan Moreno started her career as a Kelly girl temp and earned her way up the ladder to Vice President of Advertising and Marketing for a steel company. She fought her way to the top in an industry that was dominated 100% by men in the 1970s. My mother traveled all over the country and outside too many job sites to take pictures with her partner in crime, Charlie McGuire, better known as Charlie Mac.
Joan loved and ruled Las Vegas in her time, and never had to buy a meal and was a member of the exclusive Las Vegas Hilton go club. Once Wayne Newton came to Birmingham and Joan had her gold glove on and was spotted by Newton’s team and she and John were moved to the front row. Not only that, but she was noticed by Wayne Newton and invited on stage to dance, to which she seized the moment. She was not shy at all and was very proud to have gotten to dance with Wayne Newton on stage.
Grammy as she came to be known as, was proud of Amanda and spoiled her beyond belief. They shared a very special bond and a deep love for each other. They were more alike than different. Joan introduced her to shopping for bougee apparel and accessories. They loved spending time together, sharing secrets and laughing. Mom loved with a passion, the beach and the ocean. But she loved her family with all her heart, and they also loved her. Over the past years Amanda has been her primary caregiver with my wife, Donna. My mother, Joan Waine Moreno was very intelligent and just a loving and caring person. She was stubborn and hardheaded and wanted what she wanted type of person.
We know that she is in a better place now, with no illness, no pain, celebrating with her parents, friends and family who have gone home before her. We were grateful to be able to take care of my mother at home instead of somewhere else. We loved her so much and would trade it all for 5 more minutes to be able to see those eyes light up one more time. We love you and miss you. Love always your family.
A graveside service for Joan will be held Saturday, April 9, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Elmwood Cemetery & Mausoleum, 600 Martin Luther King Jr Dr, Birmingham, AL 35211.
