Peter R Portera II

Peter R Portera II, 71, died Tuesday October 28, after a hard fought battle with lung cancer. A lifelong resident of Birmingham, Mr. Portera worked in sales for many years before owning 2 Sneaky Pete's and later the Lunch Box, all before retiring from Golden Flake in June. Mr. Portera loved helping and serving people. He is preceded in death by his parents Cecil, Sr and Josephine Portera. He is survived by his long time girlfriend Mary Balog, sons Michael (Nancy), Pete III (Vickie), Frankie (Toni), and daughter Gina. His grandchildren were the delight of his life: Blake, Leanne, Aaron, Lauren, Landon, Olivia, Nicholas, Katherine, Makayla, Joey and Dominic, sister Mary Anthony (Frank), brother Cecil Portera, Jr (Mag) and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. The family is extremely grateful for the wonderful care given by Dr. Piede and the nurses and staff at the Bruno Cancer Center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Bruno Cancer Center, 810 St. Vincent's Dr., Birmingham, Al 35205. A special thank you to Hannah, Emily and Janet with New Beacon Hospice for the care and compassion over the last 4 weeks. Pallbearers: Steve Anthony, Joey Azbik, Carl Gagliano, Blake Helms, Landon Poole and Donnie Shepard. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday, October 30, 2014 at Elmwood Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Friday, October 31, 2014 at Saint Paul’s Cathedral, 2120 3rd. Birmingham, AL 35203. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
