Randy was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Brenda Saylor Scogin; his parents, W.C. Davis and Phyllis Scogin; his siblings, Charles Wayne Scogin and Katie Juanita Winfield; and his niece, Melanie Scogin.
He is survived by his siblings, Neal (Lois) Scogin, Betty Johnson, and Mancil (Cynthia) Scogin; his stepson, David (April) Tinker; his step granddaughter, Katelyn Tinker Johnston (J), and step grandson, Hunter Tinker; his sister in law, Dianna Stewart; and a host of nephews, nieces, great nephews, and great nieces.
After high school, Randy began working for Nelson Brantley Glass Company in Avondale, Alabama, as a glazier. He continued in the glass industry throughout his life, eventually owning and operating his own glass business in Oneonta. Randy and Brenda were married in 1975 and lived in Ocean Springs, Mississippi; Norcross, Georgia; and Duluth, Georgia, where Brenda passed away in 1999. Following her passing, Randy moved to Oneonta, Alabama, to assist his parents, as his father’s health was declining.
Randy enjoyed music and singing, working jigsaw puzzles, Auburn football, all sports in general, and was an avid bowler who won several tournaments at the Super Bowl in Pinson, Alabama. He was a quiet and simple man, often described as a man of few words and a good listener. Though reserved, he enjoyed lighthearted fun and “cutting up” with those around him. He had a generous heart and faithfully cared for his mother even after she became a resident of TLC Nursing Center by visiting her every other day.
Randy attended Locust Fork Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir and participated as an actor in the annual walk through dramas known as “Judgment House.” He was also employed as a custodian for the church kindergarten and volunteered at the church Family Life Center.
In 2018, due to illness, Randy became a resident of TLC Nursing Center in Oneonta, Alabama. Even there, he continued helping others and was known for his kindness and good natured humor. Both residents and staff often spoke of his lighthearted spirit and his reputation for “cutting up.”
Randy’s family extends sincere gratitude to the members of Locust Fork Baptist Church who visited and sent cards, and to the CNA staff at TLC for their friendship, patience, compassion, and for sharing in Randy’s humor over the past eight years. We also thank TLC management and nursing staff for their excellence in providing daily care to those unable to care for themselves. Our gratitude is extended as well to the staff of Enhabit Home Health and Hospice Care of Oneonta, Alabama.
We are especially thankful to the nursing staff at UAB St. Vincent’s East for their care during the many medical crises Randy endured, and to the SICU nursing staff for their compassionate care in Randy’s final hours.
