A Birmingham native and graduate of Banks High School, Randy followed in his father J.R. Reaves’ footsteps in construction. He became a superintendent at a young age having charge of large commercial projects. Randy then achieved certification as a Building Inspector through Southern Building Code Congress International, Inc., and became a commercial building inspector for the City of Hoover.
Randy had many interests including music, photography, fishing, scuba diving, and what he called tinkering in his workshop. One of his most rewarding projects was designing and building an amazing wind and solar array for his home. Randy even built the array to track the sun to optimize energy production.
Affectionately known as Mr. Okra, Randy was often featured in his wife’s tiny farm blog. He shared in the farming chores, including creating a huge aviary for the chickens. The nickname came from Randy’s love of growing and eating okra.
Randy loved his family and friends dearly, regularly making sure to tell them so - hugs included. He had a generous heart and was a thoughtful giver, opening his home to shelter family and friends in need. Randy married Sandra in 1999 and gave his best to protect, provide, and treat her as a treasure. The two were devoted to each other.
In recent years Randy spent a great deal of his time studying the Word of the LORD. His knowledge and faith increased, and Randy left for his wife all of his notes as a spiritual guide to help her upon his passing. This was divinely guided foresight, as his death was unexpected. Randy looked forward to spending eternity with Christ and our Heavenly Father. He is missed and the much anticipated reunion in Heaven will be glorious.
Randy was preceded in death by his father, James R. Reaves and his mother, Ann Perkins Reaves Conway. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Smith Reaves; his sons, Justin Reaves, Christopher Reaves, and Bradley Reaves; six grandchildren; brothers, James R. Reaves, Jr. (Jan) and J. Derrell Reaves (Charlene); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
A Celebration of Randy's life will be held on Saturday, March 23rd at Ridout's Trussville Chapel at 11 AM with visitation beginning one hour prior to service time. Interment will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery. The family gratefully acknowledges all who have so kindly prayed for Randy’s well-being and grieve with us now. You are all loved. In the name of Yahweh, Yahshua, and the Holy Spirit, we wish you His blessings.
