Raymond Allen Butts

Raymond “Allen” Butts, age 88, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, November 26, 2022. Allen was born in Irondale on April 25, 1934 and lived a full and blessed life, never having lived further than a mile from his place of birth. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Peggy Norris Butts and his parents Alta Johnson Butts and Willie Leon Butts, Sr.

He retired from Alabama Power Company after 34 years of service, having worked his way up from tree trimmer to lineman, foreman, and ultimately Birmingham Line Supervisor. He was proud of his years of service, especially his help in restoring power after storms.

He enjoyed hunting with his son Mike and his hunting buddies as a lifelong member of Beasley Hunting Club. He also served as an Irondale Volunteer Fireman for many years and was a member of Irondale First Baptist Church.

In retirement he and Peggy enjoyed RVing, often with family and friends; spending time at their beach house in Gulf Shores, hunting, working in his yard, planting and picking his vegetable garden, caring for his dog, spending time with his grandchildren, and socializing with his many friends and family.

He is survived by his loving family; among them his son Mike Butts, daughter Suzanne Butts Borchert, grandchildren Henry Borchert, James Borchert, Jack Borchert, Taylor Butts, and his beloved dog Duke. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law Willie Leon Butts, Jr. and Shirley Butts, sister-in-law Kathy Brown, sister and brother-in-law James and Joyce Norris, brother and sister-in-law Frank and Patricia Norris, as well as other relatives and countless friends.

Allen was affectionately known by many names: Daddy Butts, Granddaddy, Big Al, and Daddy Rooster. Per his requests, “no fancy dress or suits & ties – come as you are!” to his visitation, and remember him fondly and as you knew him.

A visitation for Allen will be held Sunday, November 27, 2022 from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Ridout's Trussville Chapel, 1500 Gadsden Hwy, Birmingham, AL 35235. A graveside service will occur Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at 10:00 AM at Forest Crest Cemetery, 5730 US 78, Birmingham, AL 35210.
