Reva Hires Hudson, 94, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on November 30, 2022. She was born on August 23, 1928, one of eight children born to Solomon and Ruby Hires in Ft. Myers, Florida, but later resided in Pensacola, Florida.
She accepted Jesus as her Savior at the age of 8 years old. Her constant prayer throughout her life would be that 8 generations forward would come to know the Lord. When she was 15, she met the love of her life, Rick Hudson. They married in 1946 and were married for 53 years before he passed away. She and Rick moved to Locust Fork, Alabama for a brief time after they were married, then to Birmingham, where they resided and raised their children. The greatest memory Reva’s children have is that every night; they would all climb into bed with their parents and have a time of devotion as a family. Before going to bed, Reva and Rick would pray over each of their children. They were both devoted to sharing the gospel of Jesus to everyone. She and her family were charter members of Berney Points Baptist Church, where they remained members until their deaths. They were both very active in teaching Sunday School, and were youth group leaders. Reva sang in the choir and in a trio, and had a beautiful alto voice. She and her husband were instrumental in starting the Berney Points Baptist Church School.
Reva worked at Fashion Wear before going to work at Compass Bank, where she retired in 1992. Upon her retirement, she and Rick moved to Wind Creek State Park, where they were the first full time camp hosts. With servant’s hearts, they volunteered to line up different churches to have Sunday services at Wind Creek and Vacation Bible Schools for the children. The church became known as the Church at Wind Creek. She always felt like her most important purpose in life was to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone that she could. After the death of her beloved husband in 1999, she continued to do the Lord’s work at the camp until 2006 when she returned to Birmingham to continue to serve at Berney Points Baptist Church as a Sunday School teacher in the Women’s Adult Bible Study Class. She served in that capacity until August of 2022.
She was a loving and devoted wife and mother, and a precious mother in-law. She was the most amazing intercessor you would ever meet. Reva was the mother of three: Gina Bingham (Mike), Rick Hudson (Sheila), and Larry Hudson; grandmother to 9: Lisa Chang (Phil), Diane Wynn (Ken), Caleb Scherer (Robin), Jacob Hudson, Matthew Hudson, LaKeinnya Gales, Jennifer Graham (John), Autumn Lippert (Nick), and Ali Bulger (Stephen); great-grandmother to 8: Samantha and Connor Chang, Sierra Wynn, Hannah, Emma, and Mia Scherer, and Donovan and Adelina Hudson; great great-grandmother to 2, MonDeric Gales and Mya Lippert, who all survive her. She is also survived by one brother, Donald Hires (Sandra); and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Reva was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Rick Hudson, Sr.; parents, Solomon and Ruby Hires; brothers and sisters, Daniel Hires (Ola), Marvin Hires (Joanne), Juanita Rogers (Eugene), Katherine “Kitty” Conn (Joe), Ervin Hires, and Earnest Hires; and grandson, Paul Hudson.
The family would like to thank the staff of New Beacon Hospices and Reva’s caregivers, Suzanna and Amber, for the extraordinary love and care for Reva.
There will be a visitation on Tuesday, December 6 at 2pm at Johns Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel . A celebration of Reva’s life will follow at 2:30 pm in the chapel. Burial will follow at Birmingham’s historic Elmwood Cemetery in Block 45. Pastor Anton Fourie will officiate the services.
