Richard Stewart, born December 17, 1939 in Birmingham, Alabama, died peacefully in his home on May 17, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, father James D. Stewart and mother Elaine M. Stewart. He is survived by his brother Charles D. Stewart (Linda), two nephews, Charles D. Stewart, Jr. (Malia) and James Alton Stewart (Brooke) and one niece, Susan Murdock (Gil) and four great nieces and four great nephews. He served his country in the Alabama National Guard for six years and worked in the mortgage business until retirement. He graduated from Shades Valley High School and the University of Alabama where he lettered on the tennis team and was a member of Delta Chi Fraternity. He always remained an avid Alabama fan. Richard was always faithful to help others in need but Habitat for Humanity was his passion helping to build many houses in the Birmingham area. As a member of Homewood Church of Christ he always served where needed. Richard dearly loved his church friends, exercise buddies and fellow Habitat workers. Visitation will be at Ridouts Elmwood Chapel Monday, May 21, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with graveside service to follow at 11:00 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Habitat for Humanity or Homewood Church of Christ.
