Richard Hawkins Thompson III, a man of profound kindness and quiet strength, passed away at his home in Vestavia Hills on Monday, March 23, 2026, just one day before his 60th birthday. While his time with us was cut short, the depth of his character and the warmth of his spirit left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
Richard was the embodiment of a life well-lived in the service of others. To his friends, he was a steady and caring presence; to his siblings, a loving brother; and to his children, a hero. His greatest joy was found in the simple, beautiful moments of life—tending his garden under the Alabama sun, surrounded by the loyal companionship of his dogs. Richard had a heart for all living things, a passion for the energy of rock music, and a lifelong love for sports.
He will be most fondly remembered for his hearty, infectious laugh and his uncanny ability to light up a room with a hilarious story. His legacy is one of patience and gentleness, but above all, he will be remembered as a father who loved his children with every fiber of his being.
Richard is now reunited with his beloved parents, Richard H. Thompson Jr. and Rosalyn M. Thompson, who preceded him in death.
His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his devoted wife: Vonda; his pride and joy, children: Hawkins and Hannah; his siblings: Valerie Thompson (Vic Pace), Kim Bradley (Chris), Chris Thompson, and Pat Thompson; along with a wide circle of nieces, nephews, and dear friends who were like family to him.
Family and friends are invited to gather and share stories of Richard’s life on Friday, March 27, 2026, at Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel. Visitation will be from 12:30 PM – 2:00 PM, with a Funeral Service at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery & Mausoleum.
