Robert Marvin “Bobby” Dailey, age 91, passed away at his home on Monday, August 20, 2019. He was born May 28, 1928, and was the seventh of nine children born to Rev. Archie John Dailey andf Fannie Marvin Dailey. Robert lived most of his life in the eastern area of Birmingham, graduating from Woodlawn High School where he lettered in football, basketball, and track. He was in the U.S. Navy and then played football on scholarship at the University of Louisville and Howard College (Samford University).
Mr. Dailey was self-employed as a Seating Installation Contractor. He represented several companies, installing various types of seating in fifteen U.S. states and four continents.
Robert was a member of St. John’s UMC and the Carter Sunday School Class. He was past president of the Kenny Morgan Scholarship Foundation and a member of the Earl Gartman Scholarship Foundation. Both organizations provide scholarships for students attending Samford University. For many years, Mr. Dailey was a member of Cumberland Lake Country Club where he loved to play golf with his many friends.
When Mr. Dailey’s sons were young, his greatest passion was coaching them in both baseball and basketball. Their teams won three State Championships. He was also a member of the Alabama Harmonica Association and played with several groups entertaining all over the Birmingham area.
Mr. Dailey was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, (Courtney, Merle, and Doug) and all four of his sisters, (Ilene Abbott, Doris Abbott, Rosamond King, and Ann Pinker).
Mr. Dailey was a loving and devoted husband, beloved father, and much loved grandfather. He is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Joyce Buechner Dailey and their children, Robert Marvin Dailey, Jr.(Julie Myers), John Erwin Dailey (Lisa Giattina) of Trussville, Alabama and Susan Dailey Nelson (Tom) of Gilbert, S.C. He is also survived by grandchildren, Shelbie Dailey Haars, and Olivia Dailey (Robert); John Patrick Dailey (Michelle Knowles), David Erwin Dailey (Melinda Knight), Sean Christopher (fiance’ Gabriel Mastro), Amanda Rose, and Alissa Marie Dailey (John); and Thomas Lafayette Nelson (Jordie Love), Kathrine Joyce Nelson and step-grandson Scott Nelson (Micah Maner).
His four great-grandchildren, M.J. Haars, Casen and Carter Dailey; Eliza and (soon to be) John Emil Dailey, have been the “sunshine” of his life. He is also survived by his older brother A.J. Dailey (Pat Tidwell) of Mesquite, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be his three grandsons, J.P. Dailey, David Dailey, and Sean Dailey, nephew Doug Dailey, Michael Haars, and Steve Whitman.
Funeral service will be Friday, August 23, 2019 at Ridout’s Trussville chapel. Visitation will be at 1:00 PM, and a memorial service at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
