His parents were Samuel & Ossie Mitchell. Robert was the youngest of 7 children. He was a graduate of Ensley High School. He served in the U.S. Army, dedicating his early years to protecting and serving his country. He worked at US Steel until he retired. After retirement he worked at AmSouth Bank and enjoyed decorating the windows for Christmas.
In an extraordinary love story, Robert married his soulmate and love of his life, Helen. They were married for 69 years. Together they built a beautiful life welcoming three children, Richard (Lisa), Cathy (Mike), and Robert (Lisa). His eight grandchildren, Richard (Leslie), Joanna (David), Wesley (Ashley), Spencer (Lizzy), Jason (Mallory), Meghan (Matt), Abbey (Matt), and Maggie. His 17 great-grandchildren, Josiah (Anna), Caleab, Meleah, Jace, Elijah, Libby, Carley Quinn, Annie, Addison, Tatum, Scarlett, Randi, Mary Michael, Charlotte, Samuel, Connor, and Emma. He also has a number of nephews and nieces who will hold fond memories of their beloved uncle.
He cherished spending time at home with his family. His humor brought much laughter and he never met a stranger. He had a life-long passion for music, maintaining an extensive collection. He enjoyed golfing and some farming.
A memorial service will be held at Johns Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel on Friday, March 7, 2025 at 12 pm; a visitation will be an hour before the service.
