Robert Dan Plyler passed away peacefully on Friday, October 13, 2017. Born August 7, 1916, in Newtonville, Alabama, Dan was the youngest of the six children of John Wesley and Mary Alice Yerby Plyler. Having survived the Great Depression relying on his smarts and skills, Dan served in the United States Merchant Marine during World War II and, after working as Chief Engineer for Sears Roebuck in downtown Birmingham, founded Plyler Services, the city’s first commercial air conditioning company, which served the Birmingham business community for forty years. A lifelong avid outdoorsman, Dan was Commandant of the Birmingham Cruising Club and a member of the Halala and Choctaw Bend Hunting Clubs. He was especially passionate about his beloved Alabama football and, even in his last days, never missed a game. Of all of his accomplishments in life, Dan was proudest of his beautiful wife of 55 years, Ruth (deceased), his children Patsy, Danny (deceased), Rick (Pat), Sherry (Bob Finnell), and Jay (Debbie), ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Graveside services for Robert Dan Plyler will be held Wednesday, October 18, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery, Birmingham, under the direction of Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please give to your favorite charity in celebration of Dan.
