
Roger C. Clayton 78, of Birmingham, passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2011. A life-long resident of Birmingham, he was the only child of the late Clifton D. Clayton and Lois R. Clayton. Mr. Clayton was a graduate of West End High School and Birmingham-Southern College. His professional career was in the Investment Banking business. He began his career at Hugo Marx & Co., where he worked for many years. He retired one year ago from Joe Jolly & Co. He was well-respected in his field, having served as the President of the Alabama Security Dealers Association. A gifted tenor, he performed in many Town and Gown and Birmingham Civic Opera productions and as a soloist in the South Highland Presbyterian Church Choir for many years. He also served for a time as Cantor at Temple Emanu-El. He was a long-time member of the Smiling Mallards, a local hunting club. He was a member of South Highland Presbyterian Church, where he served as Deacon and Elder and taught several Sunday School classes for adults and youth. He is survived by his wife, Jean Clayton; his children: son, Jeffrey C. Clayton (Heidi Peterson) of Kansas City, KS; daughters, Kimberly L. Clayton of Decatur, GA and Susan A. Clayton of Birmingham; a stepson, Brian Hall (Stacy) of Tuscumbia, AL; grandchildren: Jonathan and Katherine Richter of Decatur, GA; Ellen and Joshua Clayton of Kansas City, KS; and Jake Hall of Tuscumbia, AL; and several nieces and nephews. He is loved and remembered by a host of other friends and family.
Visitation will take place at Ridout's Elmwood Chapel, 800 Dennison Avenue SW on Sunday, November 27, 2011 from 5:00-7:00PM. A graveside service will be held on Monday, November 28, 2011 at 10:00AM at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to South Highland Presbyterian Church, 2035 Highland Avenue South; The Andrew Gainey Scholarship at Birmingham-Southern College, 900 Arkadelphia Road; or a charity of your choice.
