On Thursday, March 21, 2019, Rogers Sisson, dearly loved and cherished husband, daddy, father-in-law, granddaddy, brother, and friend unexpectedly left this world for his Heavenly home after 89 rich, full years of life. He was a unique and amazing man, full of talents, hobbies, and interests, but was most known for his devotion to his family, his quiet confidence, and his servant heart. He was truly a living example of Christ.
A native and longtime resident of Haleyville, Al, Rogers was born on March 17, 1930, to parents George & Beaulah Sisson. A 1949 graduate of Haleyville High School, Rogers was an accomplished student and outstanding athlete, earning honors in football, baseball, basketball, track, swimming, and diving. He was inducted into the Winston County Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. He was a veteran of the Korean War, where he served in the U.S. Army. Rogers married Peggy Sisson (Ayers) on March 5th, 1952. She was his sweetheart and the prettiest girl he had ever seen for 67 happy years.
Rogers is survived by his wife, Peggy; daughters Jane McKinney and her husband Harlon; and Carol Garrett and her husband Danny; grandsons Zach McKinney and his wife Becca; Jake Garrett and his wife Maddie; John Garrett and his wife Jenny; and Nick Garrett and his fiancee Hope Todd; and great-grandchildren Naomi and Conor McKinney. Other survivors include one brother George Sisson, Jr. and sister Patsy Knight (Sisson). He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters Mildred Sisson Bates, Dorothy Sisson Benton, Beverly Sisson Taylor and brother, Harold Sisson. Rogers was blessed with a host of loving nieces, nephews and friends.
Rogers loved and served Jesus Christ as a member and deacon of Haleyville First Baptist Church for most of his life. He was known for his quiet wisdom and servant leadership.
He was a railroad man through and through, spending the bulk of his 43-year career as an Engineer for the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad. After retiring from the ICG, he worked for 13 years as a part-time dispatcher for the Haleyville Police and Fire Department.
In 2008 Rogers and Peggy moved to Trussville, Al and became active members of their new community. They joined First Baptist Church Trussville, where Rogers served as deacon, was a member of the Senior Adult Choir, and the Dan Sims Sunday School Class.
Rogers will always be remembered as a loving husband, a devoted family man, and a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. He was the rock of his family and showed everyone around him what it meant to be a servant who daily walks in communion with Christ.
He was a very special man whose life was a blessing to everyone who knew him, and he will be deeply missed.
Memorial services will be held at First Baptist Church Trussville Sunday afternoon March 24, with visitation from 2 to 4, and the service at 4 p.m.
There will be a visitation at Haleyville First Baptist Church on Monday, March 25 from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by a memorial service and then interment at Winston Memorial Cemetery.
