

Sam was born on September 25, 1932, in Birmingham, Alabama, and remained deeply rooted in the community he called home throughout his life. He was a devout and faithful Catholic who did his best to never miss Mass, living his life guided by faith, integrity, and gratitude to God. Sam was also very proud of his Italian heritage, which shaped his values, traditions, and strong devotion to family.
Sam put himself through school and earned 5 degrees in architecture and design. A hardworking and accomplished businessman, Sam was the owner of Creative Designers and Builders, a company he built with pride through dedication, craftsmanship, and unwavering work ethic. His work and reputation reflected the same care and commitment he showed to those he loved.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Sam A. Spano, Jr. and Lena Elizabeth Spano; his beloved wife of sixty years, Josephine T. Spano; and his cherished son, Sammy A., IV; granddaughter, Amanda; and brother Anthony.
He leaves behind a loving family, including sons, Louis J. (Amy), Bernard J., Tony K(Amber)., and Paul C.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom will forever treasure his guidance, love, and enduring example of faith and perseverance.
Visitation will be held at Elmwood Chapel Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 8, 2026 from 5pm until 7 pm; a second visitation will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 1728 Oxmoor Rd, Homewood, AL 35209, US, on April 9, 2026, from 10:30 am to 11:30 am, followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Church on April 9, 2026, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, where Sam will be laid to rest beside his beloved family members who went home to be with the Lord before him.
Sam’s life was a testament to faith, family, and hard work. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy of love, devotion, and strength will live in the hearts of all who knew and loved him
