Sarah was born on April 3, 1935 in Birmingham, Alabama to Clint and Emma Massengale. The youngest of 4 children, her brothers – James R. Massengale, Joseph W. Massengale – her sister, Mary Louise McMillan all preceded her in death.
Known for her ease in frequent conversation with even total strangers, Sarah easily made friends everywhere she went. She loved nothing more than spending time with family, especially around the holidays.
Sarah graduated from Phillips High School and worked various jobs, including being an Administrative Assistant for UAB Medicine.
She met her Sweetheart, Sam B. Murphree, through mutual friends. Sam endearingly referred to her as his “Sweet Angel Baby”. They were married on July 2, 1960. Married for 64 years, Sarah & Sam enjoyed their time together and traveled many places. Their favorite trip was seeing the Holy Land in Israel.
Possessing a true servant’s heart, Sarah faithfully cared for family and friends. A woman of faith and a heart of gold, Sarah led others with her tireless Christian example, and also through various volunteer activities including singing with Sam at the Village at Cook Springs. She lived her life based on her strong Christian faith.
Sarah precedes her husband, Sam B. Murphree in death. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews.
Visitation information for friends and family of Sarah Anne Murphree: Visitation and services will be held at Johns-Ridouts-Elmwood Chapel, 800 Dennison Ave SW, Birmingham, AL 35211 on Thursday, July 11, 2024. Family will receive visitors from 12:00 – 2:00 pm. Following visitation, there will be a Service led by Jimmy Wilson at 2:00 pm. Graveside service will follow.
