

Tom was born in Jasper, AL and grew up in Sheffield, AL. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, colleague, and friend. He will be greatly missed by his daughters Teri and Traci. He was a loving and caring grandfather to his four granddaughters and his six great grandchildren.
Tom has a distinguished career with the United States Postal Service. He retired in 1989 as a Postal Inspector with the Postal Inspection Service in Birmingham, AL. He was fortunate to spend his entire career in the Southern Region and did not have to relocate during his law enforcement career.
He was a proud American who cherished our country's freedom and was honored to serve his country as a veteran of the Korean War serving as a sergeant in the US Army Security Agency. He worked with codes and ciphers as a Cryptographer.
Tom loved people and will be missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church, Birmingham, AL and served in many positions.
Services will be held on Monday, July 13* at Ridout's in Trussville with burial at Jefferson Memorial Gardens.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Nell Sherer, his parents, Thomas and Lois Sherer, brother, Carl D. Sherer, sister-in-law, Frankie Sherer, grandson, Josh Copeland, sister, Carole Darby, and brother, Hugh Sherer.
He is survived by his daughters, Teri Patterson (Bobby), Traci Copeland (Jason), brother, Jimmy Sherer, grandchildren, Diana Hatchett (Kyle), Ashley Ogletree (Michael), Taylor Federico (Marc), Makenzie Barber (DJ), great grandchildren, Ellie Grace Ogletree, Amelia Gray Federico, Sophie Kate Ogletree, Elsie Ruth Hatchett, Hampton Thomas Federico, and Scottie Blair Ogletree; along with many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Eastside Baptist Church.
The family would also like to give thanks to the doctors, nurses, and palliative care associates for their care and kindness.
