
Wallace Raymond Long was born to Alfred Posey Long and Sara Williams Long. He graduated from Mortimer Jordan High School in 1944 as salutatorian of his class. He worked at Ridout’s Funeral Home from 1942-1944, and then worked for Coca-Cola for 3 years. At that time, he joined the Maritime Service, and rode T-2 tankers to the European theatre of World War II. He also carried one-hundred pound and five-hundred pound bombs to Okinawa, until his discharge in 1946. He attended Auburn University for two years, and then left to play professional baseball in the Detroit organization for one year. He joined the Air Force and coached baseball and basketball in the 12th Air Force. After an honorable discharge from the Air Force, he worked for ACIPCO, attended Birmingham Southern College and completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Education. He taught and coached at Shades Valley High School and Berry High School, and then went on to teach history and coach at Gresham Junior High School for 30 years. He moved to Orange Beach, Alabama upon his retirement. He is survived by two sisters, Betty Randle and Ellen Wilson, both of Pinson, Alabama, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who love him dearly. Visitation was on Monday, January 5th from 6:00-8:00 PM at Ridout’s Funeral Home in Trussville, Alabama. The funeral was at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, January 6th at Pinson United Methodist Church, and burial followed in Marvin’s Chapel Cemetery.
