My father, William L. Smith of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, worked with Mr. Baird many years ago at U.S. Steel in Birmingham. They have been corresponding regularly for the past few years, and the affection and respect between them is clear. My father is blind now at age 97, so he has been sending Bill's letters to me so I could read them to him. Each letter sparked a lot of memories in my Dad that underscored the mutual respect they had for one another as friends and business colleagues. I am an author, and Bill was always interested in my books and career, and for that I'll be forever grateful. Condolences from my entire family, and best of luck as you move forward.
