Coach Legg was a mainstay in Jefferson County as the Athletic Director for so many years. He was a gentleman and a friend to all coaches. He will be missed but moreover fondly remembered by many.

Coach Legg was a great coach and such a positive influence during my early years in Woodlawn sports.  Will never forget Coach Legg driving our 19 year old baseball team to a national tournament at Johnstown PA in a school bus. Coach Legg was a fine gentleman and it was a privilege to work with him as MC of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Breakfasts for many of the early Alabama Hall of Fame inductee weekends. Each one was an outstanding event and still are today because of his commitment to Jesus Christ and his desire to make this an important part of the inductee weekends. He ran his race well and his Christian influence will be felt for a long time. "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints"...Psalm 116:15

Coach Legg had lots of influence on me both in my high school years and for some years after that. I was glad to be his manager, statistician, and stadium announcer for quite a few years. He had a strong sense of right and wrong, and passed those on to us. He did well coaching basketball and football, and he knew how to beat many of those good Hueytown football teams! And his Mounties played in Alabama's first football playoff game, in 1966. God bless those around him.

For some reason, I was thinking of Coach on Saturday. Then when I talked to my Mom on Sunday, she told me he had passed away on Friday. Though gone, he will always be an important part of who I am. I still remember the geometry and all the important "life lessons" he taught me as a student and member of his basketball teams. He took my teammates and I to the State Tourney in 1962, but took us and many more even farther in life. God Bless him.  SVHS '62.

What a SPECIAL man he was! They just don't make them like him anymore. The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame would not be where it is today without his guidance and wisdom. He was such a dear friend of my father, Elbert Jemison. He will be so missed. Love and prayers to all of his family during this difficult time.

My sincere condolences to the family of "Coach" Legg. Being a former struggling  geometry student at SVHS, he was always kind & patient with someone who "just didn't get it"...and I passed!  Great man & favorite teacher who will be missed.

He coached me in track in 1962-64 and taught me geometry in 1962-63 at Shades Valley High School. College and work took me away from  Birmingham, but I will always remember his patience and understanding, as well as his inspiration. Coach Legg was a great influence on many young men, myself included at SVHS.I was honored to be part of his first team as a head coachat SVHS. His passing is a great loss to us on earth, but a great gain in Heaven.   I know he is in heaven, more than likely, trying is get a group of angels to coach. My deepest sympathy to the Legg family.

Coach was an inspiration to all students, not just male athletes. I am proud when I saw him several years ago, he not only remembered me, he remembered me well. What a great man and a coach. I adored him as a student would and will until the day I join him in heaven.

After reading about Coach Legg, I now know where his son, Murray gets at least some of his good character; obviously from his dad and I am sure, Murray's mom too.  Wow!  What a great man Coach Legg was and a celebration of life of a man who positively touched so many lives both directly and indirectly.  Thanks for being my friend, Murray.

I knew his mother when I was a tiny little girl. She was so sweet. Also had Coach Leg for geometry at Shades Valley. He was as nice as his mother though I was not very good at geometry.

He was a great man and I enjoyed playing for him even if it was just the B team for 1966 and going to the first state playoff in Alabama high school history. I will never forget the days I work with him. He will be missed by all.

Coach Legg was one of my mentors and a man I held in the highest esteem. God bless you Coach Legg. You influenced so many people over your exceptional career and the world is a better place for it.

The loss of a coach such as Bill Legg is more than the death of a man. This is a loss of a man who spent his whole life in the service to others. Throughout his coaching career he has influenced hundreds of players and spectators with his moral obligation to be the best he could be, while shaping his players to do the same. I know, I was one of his players as well as a neighbor in Edgewood. The power of a good coach is to see beyond the years of a player's competition and Coach Legg was great at this. His focus on winning also included his focus on the person that each player he tutored would become over the course of that player's lifetime. 

May the love of our Savior be with Coach Legg's family at this time.
