ROGERS, WILLIAM GEORGE William George Rogers went to be with our Savior on June 1, 2011 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Rogers was born on November 10, 1933 in Marion County, Alabama, the son of Luther S. and Maggie Donaldson Rogers, both deceased. He grew up in Sandusky, Alabama. George graduated from Phillips High School in 1951 where he was a member of the Ushers Club, the football and track teams, a member of the 1950 Alabama High School Athletic Association state championship football team and was also selected as a member of the 1950 All-City and All-State football teams. Mr. Rogers received a football scholarship to Auburn University from which he graduated in 1955. At Auburn, he met the love of his life, Dolores Dulion, to whom he was married for almost 56 years. Mr. Rogers lettered in football and track at Auburn, was president of the Auburn University Spike Shoe Track Club, a member of the Arnold Air Society and the ROTC program. During his football days at Auburn, George and his brother, Don L. Rogers, became known as the two bookends of the Auburn offensive line. Upon graduation from Auburn, Mr. Rogers was drafted by the Green Bay Packers but fulfilled his military duties with the U.S. Air Force where he was a 2nd Lieutenant and later served as a Captain in the U.S.A.F. Reserve. Following his military service, Mr. Rogers was a pharmaceutical sales representative for Eaton Labs and J.B. Roerig, Divisions of Pfizer, Inc. In the early 1970s, Mr. Rogers and his brother, Don L. Rogers, formed Rogers/Site Construction Company, a home building company which built hundreds of homes for families in the eastern area of Birmingham. In later years, Mr. Rogers was president and part owner of RPM Installations, Inc. in Leeds, Alabama. During his lifetime, Mr. Rogers graciously gave his time, talent and efforts to his beloved sport of football where he officiated high school football games for years and became a founding member and was past-President of the Metropolitan Football Officials Association. He was also certified as an official with the Alabama High School Athletic Association. Mr. Rogers was affiliated for many years with the Huffman High School Boosters Club and the Auburn Football Letterman's Club. He was also a member of the Birmingham Homebuilders Association. Mr. Rogers was a long-time member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Huffman and more recently St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Hoover. At Our Lady of Lourdes, Mr. Rogers was a Lector, an Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister and past President of the Parrish Council. Mr. Rogers is survived by his wife of almost 56 years, Dolores Dulion Rogers, his children Richard Dulion Rogers (Cindy), Timothy Sanders Rogers (Kathy), Suzanne Rogers Monk (Steve), and Christopher William Rogers (Kim). Mr. Rogers was also blessed with his seven grandchildren: Jacob McHugh Rogers, Michael William Rogers, Margaret Violette Rogers, Saxon Rogers Monk, Sinclair Rothschild Monk, Hannah Kendyl Rogers and Madeline Camille Rogers. Mr. Rogers is also survived by his brother, Don L. Rogers, with whom he shared so much of his life and found so much happiness. George Rogers will be remembered for many things - an athlete, a businessman, a tireless supporter of church, civic and high school programs, but most especially, as a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to all. Services will include a wake on Friday, June 3 2011 from 5:00 to 7;00 p.m. at Ridout's Trussville Chapel with a funeral mass Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Hoover, Alabama with burial to follow at Elmwood Cemetery. The family expresses its utmost appreciation to Dr. Brian Adler and his staff, Dr. John Hankins (retired) and his staff, Dr.Fred Dumas, Dr. Christopher Roney, the staff on the 7th floor of Brookwood Medical Center, Larry Gray and Rosie Allen for their care and support.
