Born to wonderful parents, John and Olive Hayes Chambers, of Monroe County, Indiana. Carl Chambers leaves behind his true love and bride of 68 years, Patricia Chambers; his children Gary Chambers (Joanie), Perry Chambers (Sharon), Doug Chambers (Sara); six grandchildren, Stephen Max Chambers, Carl A. Chambers (Rachael), Melissa Stewart (Ryan), Joe Chambers, Matthew Chambers, Jacob Chambers; and six (6) great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, along with his one sister Kathryn Chambers Shirley-Kohl and infant sister Roselie Chambers.
Our beloved husband, father and grandfather was the emotional rock of the family; sensitive, caring and humble; truly taking pride and enjoyment in the achievements of his family and savoring their time together. Strong in character, uncompromising in principle and independent in mind, and having a sense of humor with an occasional sarcastic delivery. He will be forever remembered and sorely missed by his loving family and all who knew him.
Carl was a graduate of Smithville High School in 1951. He attended the University of Louisville for Criminal Justice.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War from 1951-1958. He was stationed at Geneva NY, Sheppard AFB Texas, Chanute AFB in IL, and Fairchild AFB in WA State. During his service he was an electrical engineer on B-36 bombers. He spent time at duty stations in Guam and Okinawa. He was especially proud of being awarded the Oak Cluster medal for his distinguished service. Also, while stationed at Fairchild AFB, he was a member of the base basketball team, competing against local colleges.
Carl became a police officer for the City of Bloomington in 1958, rising through the ranks to Bloomington Chief of Police in 1972. He retired from the police department in 1978.
After retiring from the Police Department he took on the position of Director of Safety and Security at the Bloomington Hospital from 1979 thru 1997.
Two of Carl's greatest passions were racing sprint cars in Southern Indiana and pitching horseshoes in Florida. He developed many friends in his tenure of racing and competing in horseshoe competitions; earning the 2005 and 2006 Class Championship in the National Horseshoe Pitching Association.
