A native of Knightridge, Charlie was born October 14, 1943, and moved to Spencer with his wife and daughters in 1971. He retired from Twigg Corporation after 26 years of employment. He attended Freedom Church of the Nazarene.
Charlie’s hobbies included fishing, mushroom hunting, trigonometry, listening to George Jones, and spending time with and doing things for his family. Charlie was “Mr. Fix-it” with a talent for fixing anything that needed it, another one of his hobbies.
Charlie’s family was everything to him, and he loved them very much, always telling his daughters and grandchildren that he would fight mountain lions and wrestle bears for them.
With a good sense of humor and peaceful and quiet demeanor, Charlie was a man of faith who always put others before himself, and his kindness and politeness was beyond measure. He had no enemies or quarrels with anyone. To know him was to like him.
Fighting three battles with cancer over a 20 year period, Charlie was brave and endured more than any human body should have to, and he did so with courage, strength, and finesse. He always had a smile and a nod of thanks to all who he encountered right up to the end. God’s grace and love carried him and his family through the difficult journey, and his family praises God for the miracle of their “Pap”, as they all called him.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years Doris I. Wilson of Spencer; two brothers, Alfred Wilson of Spencer and Phillip Wilson of Martinsville; his two daughters, Kimberly (Dennis) Prunty and Cynthia (Roger) Herrington, both of Spencer; his four grandchildren, Brandi (Doug) Smeltzer, Michael (Tina) Prunty, Bryan Herrington, and Lexie Herrington, all of Spencer; and five great grandchildren, Brooklyn Smeltzer, Brinden Smeltzer, Brayden Prunty, Haylen Smeltzer, and Kaitlynn Prunty, all of Spencer.
Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Ross Wilson and Dorthy Mae Wilson; and three brothers, Alvin Wilson, Ben Wilson, and Larry Wilson.
Funeral services to celebrate his life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at Day Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Chambersville Cemetery in Spencer. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at Day Funeral Home in Bloomington.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. William J. Schmalz and staff, Dr. Patton, and Vistacare Hospice and staff, particularly nurses Charlie, Angie, and CNA Therease for their dedicated compassion and care to Charlie during his illness.
