David Lawrence Kleindorfer aka “Porky”, 82, died Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at Bloomington Hospital. He had been battling health issues for months, and passed away due to cardiac arrest. He was born on June 20, 1940, in Monroe County, and was the son of Shelby Andrew Kleindorfer and Dorothy Marie (White) Kleindorfer. David was a loving husband to Phyllis Mae (Polley) Kleindorfer. They were married for 58 years. He was a very caring father to Ricky Charles Kleindorfer, Jeffrey Scott Kleindorfer, Sheila Marie (Kleindorfer) Mauro, and Gail Renee Kleindorfer.
David attended St. Charles Borromeo School from 1st-8th grade, where he was an altar boy. David graduated from Bloomington High School, Class of 1958. Following graduation, he served with the U.S. Army Reserve Training Unit. David’s term was 6 months active duty, 5 ½ years active reserve, and 2 years standby. He completed boot camp at Ft. Leonardwood, Missouri and Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. He served in the 5th Army Regiment as a Corporal.
David’s hobbies consisted of shooting pool and snooker, bowling, and fishing. He started setting pins at his Dad’s business, Indiana Bowling Alley, at the age of 11. He set bowling pins from 1951-1957, using a B-10 machine. Around David’s junior year of high school, they invented the automatic machines. Then, his dad sold the business, and he continued setting pins for the new owner from 1957-1959. From 1959-1960 David worked for a Brush Business, spraying brush underneath power lines in Monroe County. From 1960-1964 he worked for RCA. On July 25, 1964, David married Phyllis Mae Polley. Shortly after, he bought Kleindorfer’s Hardware and Variety Store from his father, after his dad fell ill with Congenital Heart Disease. David has owned Kleindorfer’s Hardware Store for 58 years.
David was an avid bowler. At the age of 18 he bowled a 300 game, and also bowled a brilliant 802 series. It was only the third perfect game on record at the Indiana Lanes bowling alley. He bowled 18 strikes in a row, to include his 300 score in the second of a three-game series. His total was 781 for the series. He came back the next day and bowled within one pin of
another 300 game. He then put together a string of 16 straight strikes for a career high total of 802 points for a three-game series.
David was a very kind soul, supporting his community on a regular basis. He always wished to stay anonymous, he wanted no praise. He just felt the need to help. He contributed to more places and people than we could ever name. He highly supported our local Police and all branches of service.
David was an active member of the Catholic faith at St. Charles Borromeo Church. He attended church every Saturday evening, and all holidays observed by the Catholic faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Ricky Charles Kleindorfer (son), Donald Edward Kleindorfer (brother), Robert Franklin Kleindorfer (brother), Pauline Kleindorfer (sister), John Andrew Kleindorfer (brother), Harry Stanley Kleindorfer (brother), Paul Jerome Kleindorfer (brother), and Thomas Lee Kleindorfer (brother).
