Obituary of Donald Francis Martin
Donald Francis Martin was born on June 30, 1931 in Omaha, NE and passed away on June 8, 2021 at the Veterans hospital in Louisville. Don was born to Francis Charles and Anna Marie (Kozol) Martin in Omaha, NE on June 30, 1931. After graduating from high school, Don worked briefly for Kellogg's before serving his country in the Korean War as a track-based mechanic. He received the Korean Service Medal and two Bronze Stars. After returning home, he married Jean Eleanor (Magnuson), with whom he spent 50 years and had five sons. Don was employed by the NCR Corporation for over 37 years, holding various management positions. In 1966, this brought him and his family to Indiana, where they lived in Richmond, Evansville, Carmel, and Fort Wayne. After his retirement, he lived in Bloomington, Columbus, and New Albany. Don always liked to keep busy by volunteering. He crafted wooden toys, delivered meals, and GPS mapped trails in the Hoosier National Forest. He was gifted with an incredible memory and wrote pages and pages containing his reminiscences about growing up, falling in love, serving his country, and starting a family. He is survived by his wife, Janet Schoman Martin, whom he married on December 2, 2004, and his five sons and their spouses: Jeff (Kathy Watson) of Indianapolis, IN; Jim (Susan) of Bloomington, IN; Jack (Chris) Martin of Noblesville, IN; Joe (Cristina) Martin of Louisville, KY; and Jerry (Monica) Martin of Greencastle, IN. Don is also survived by eight grandchildren and their spouses (Beth-Zandr, Matt-Sarah, Joel-Carolyn, Maggie-Heidi, Molly, John, T.J., and Liam), one great-grandchild, Luke, and his brother, Tom Martin of Omaha, NE. Don was lucky enough to have a "bonus" family for 17 years, including step-children David (Debbie) Schoman and Linda Burke; nine grandchildren and their spouses (Josh-Julie, Josh-Joanna, Lelah-Kevin, Emily-Tyler, and Steven); and seven great-grandchildren (Nathan, Kaleigh, Chloe, Kierdyn, Ava, Hazel, and Vivian). He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Kathleen (Martin) Olsen, and his first wife, Jean. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home, 4150 E.
