

Dorothy Raber, age 93, a resident at the Meadowood Retirement Community died at Meadowood on December 2, 2014. Dottie was born in Beech Grove, Indiana on October 6, 1921, daughter of Lewis G. and Hazel (Harbaugh) Lockman.
Following her graduation from Beech Grove High School, Purdue University and the Dietetics Program of the Indiana University Hospitals, she was a dietitian at the Indiana University Hospitals, Indianapolis and the Food Services Department of the Indiana Memorial Union, Bloomington where her husband, Nevin Raber, whom she wed in 1943, attended Indiana University.
After living in Indianapolis for 15 years, the family moved to Bloomington in 1962 and she became active in numerous philanthropic organizations. She was a volunteer at the Bloomington Hospital and a member of Psi Iota Xi. Later, she became the Director of Volunteers at the hospital—a position she held for 15 years. After retirement in 1984, she served as Co-chairman of the Bloomington Meals-On-Wheels program and continued to participate in the program after her Chairmanship.
Dottie was a talented seamstress, a shrewd bridge player, and an excellent baker. She could find something to talk about with anyone, easily making friends out of strangers.
Dottie is survived by her husband, Nevin W. Raber, a son, Nevin Douglas (Jessica) Raber of Marion, IA, a daughter, Ann (Charles) Dobbs of Bloomington, and grand-children Hannah (Matthew) Cummings and Jonathan Dobbs. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Velta Grand-Girard.
Friends may call at Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home; 4150 E. Third St. on Friday (12/5) from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A private funeral and interment will be later at Valhalla Memory Garden with Rev. Bruce Ervin of the First Christian Church officiating.
