Gary Donavan Winder

Gary Donavan Winder, 77, of Bloomington, Indiana, passed away on August 6, 2024. Born on August 2, 1947, in Sheridan, Illinois, to Hiram and Madelyn Winder, Gary lived a life filled with love, learning, and laughter.

As a youth, Gary saved the life of a young boy from drowning in Terre Haute in 1962 for which he was granted an Award of Valor for his heroic action. This valor and courage were characteristics he carried through life and passed on to his children.

A proud alumnus of Indiana University, Gary graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor's of Science in Education. During his college years, he was an active member of the Kappa Delta Rho Fraternity and the IU Student Foundation, fostering lifelong friendships and a deep commitment to his alma mater.

Gary is survived by his loving wife, Ginger Winder, who stood by his side through life's joys and challenges. He leaves behind a legacy of love in his children: daughter Kim Winder Anderson (grandchildren Tyler and Haley), son Brandt Winder (grandchildren Stevie and Max), and stepson Ryan Vicari (grandchildren Alaia, Anara, and Aislyn). Gary's role as a father and grandfather was one he cherished above all else.

Gary's passion for golf was well-known among friends and family. He found joy and relaxation on the greens, often using the sport as a way to connect with others and enjoy the outdoors. His love for history led him on numerous adventures, as he and Ginger traveled extensively, exploring new cultures and historical sites around the world.

A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date to honor Gary's memory and the impact he had on so many lives. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that charitable contributions be made to the IU Foundation, supporting the institution that played such a significant role in shaping Gary's life and values.

Gary Donavan Winder will be deeply missed and fondly remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His legacy of kindness, curiosity, and devotion will continue to inspire all who knew him.
