

Georgianna “Jan” Estes, age 92, of Bloomington passed away at Meadowood on Sunday, June 5. She was born June 18, 1918 in Indianapolis, the daughter of George and Annabel (Roempke) Amt. Jan was a graduate of Manuel High School and then spent a year at John Herron Art School in Indianapolis before continuing on to Stephens College, where she received her A.A. degree in Design. It was there that she met her husband, Dr. Ambrose C. Estes who was attending the University of Missouri. They married in 1942 after he completed his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania and before serving as a medical doctor in W.W. II in the European Campaign. Jan and Ambrose were married 54 years until he died in 1996. They moved to Bloomington in 1950 when he established his General Surgery medical practice. Jan was an avid golfer and bridge player which she enjoyed with her family and friends. She loved to travel and was a talented artist and needlecrafter. She was active in many groups, including Unique Club, 18th Century Club, Navajo Club, and Tri Kappa. Jan was also a past President of the Boys Club Auxiliary and the Monroe-Owen County Medical Society Auxiliary. She and her husband were founding members of the I.U. Varsity Club and attended every home football and basketball game for over 40 years.
Jan is survived by her three children and their spouses, Jon (Anna-Lena) Estes, of Fairfield, CT., David (Lorna) Estes of Bloomington and Ann (Dennis) Silvis, of Loudon, TN. She also has five grandchildren, Alexsandra Stortstrom, of Fairfield, CT, Robert Estes, of Carlsbad, CA, Ryan Estes, of Fort Mill, SC, Adam Estes, of Bloomington and Charles Estes, of Jersey City, NJ as well as six step-grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Hank and Janet Amt, of Franklin, Indiana and their three children.
Services will be held at Day Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, June 10, at 1:30 P.M. Friends may visit the family between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Friday before the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jan can be made to either the Bloomington Hospital Foundation or to the Boys and Girls Club of Bloomington.
