A year after graduating from Bloomington High School, she married Cleo M. Gilliland on June 21, 1946. She remained lovingly devoted to him until his death in July, 1979 at the age of 55.
Mom loved her family, flowers, embroidery, crocheting, music, and tending to a large vegetable garden every summer. She was also a wonderful cook and enjoyed planning Sunday afternoon meals, making sure that the favorite dishes of her children and grandchildren were always a part of the menu. Mom took on the responsibility of nurse while caring for our father the last five years of his life. His dialysis equipment was installed in our home and she was the caregiver in charge of his dialysis every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, beginning at five AM.
Mom did everything in her power to extend his life as long as possible. Mom loved
to sing gospel songs while she cooked or cleaned. We knew the words to the Old Rugged Cross, How Great Thou Art, in the Garden, and Amazing Grace before we ever started grade school. Mom took time every morning to read the bible, and read all the way through it many, many times. She never hesitated to tell people about her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ to and profess her love and faith in Him. She was soft-spoken, kind, and an abundance of patience. She always looked for the good in everyone she met. We miss you Mom, but your example and testimony gives us great comfort.
