She grew up in Dallas, Texas, the daughter of Irving Jerome (“Jerry”) and Margaret Jane (“Peggy”) Fowler. She graduated high school from Ursuline Academy, graduated with honors from Boston College, studied abroad for a year at Oxford University, and earned her doctorate in Educational Psychology from U.T. Austin.
Laura moved to Bloomington, Indiana in 1995, where her two children Margaret Eileen (“Maggie”) and William Fowler (“Will”) Hopkins were born. In Bloomington, Laura worked for Indiana University in a variety of jobs until 2008 and then used her skills as a gifted writer to help many academics publish manuscripts and receive grants.
In 2006, Laura met her long-time partner, Marc Sattinger, with whom she lived the remainder of her life. Marc and Laura shared their life with their loving dog, Sam.
Laura loved people, not just her friends, but people. She had an amazing ability to strike up lively conversations with anyone. She loved new experiences, even simple things like trying the latest car wash or exploring new hiking paths. She wanted to share these experiences with friends, neighbors, and acquaintances. She had an insatiable curiosity, constantly asking questions. She read, read, read. She enjoyed the humor of every day life. You always knew she’d get a smile out of you, and more often than not a good laugh.
She is survived by her parents, her children, and her partner; her Aunt Kay and Uncle Charles Joseph (“Joe”) Paine of Shreveport, LA; her cousins Stephen Paine, Kelley Paine, DVM Catherine Foret, and Ceci Johnson and her family, all from Shreveport, LA; cousins Susan Grogan of Kansas City, Mo; and Cathy Grogan and Christine Smith, of Milwaukee, WI. She was preceded in death by her grandmother Kathleen Moran Phillips of Shreveport, LA and her grandmother Anne Fletcher of Shreveport, LA.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Paul’s Catholic Center, Bloomington, Indiana, on April 3rd at 10 a.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home.
