Marion Lee “Butch” Butcher, age 82, of Indianapolis, died Wednesday evening at I.U. Health; Morgan Hospital in Martinsville. Born July 9, 1929 in Smithville, he was the son of Alva Thomas and Freda Lois (Mitchell) Butcher. He attended Wabash College in the late 1940’s and played on their basketball team. He retired in 1993 after 44 years of service from Citizens Gas and Coke in Indianapolis where he was the superintendent of buildings and grounds. He never met a stranger and loved just being with people, especially his loving family and close friends. His interests included a love of farming and furniture making. After his retirement he also loved traveling, fishing and walking. He was adored for his great sense of humor. He was a member of Glenns Valley United Methodist Church.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Mike Heidelberger, of Martinsville; his three sons and daughters-in-law; Max and Kathleen Butcher, of Nashville, Indiana, Anthony “Tony” and Pam Butcher, of New Palestine, Indiana and Ronald and Lori Butcher, of Plainfield, Indiana; one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Mike Heidelberger, of Martinsville, his soul mate, Debra Manning, of Bloomington; nine grandchildren, Christopher, Michelle, Brooke, Nicholas, Teresa, Douglas, Jonathan, Matthew and Courtny; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Charles and Donald Keith Butcher and his pet shih-tzu, “Spike” and his wives, Ellen (Eaton) Butcher and Colleen (Kirkman) Butcher.
The funeral service will be held on Sunday at 2:00 P.M. at the Day Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Chambersville Cemetery. Friends may visit the family on Saturday from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
The family suggests to friends who wish that memorial contributions be given to the Humane Association of their choice.
