Mark Richard Burris, age 73, of Bloomington passed away Thursday, May 15, 2025 at his home, exactly where he would have wanted to be. Born March 8, 1952 in Indianapolis, he was the son of Hershel and Joan “Jo” (McElroy) Burris.
Mark loved his wife and his family more than anything. He and Rebecca were high school sweet hearts and together they built and cared for the beautiful home they have lived in for over 50 years. You would often find him outside mowing the horse pastures, fishing in the lake that he made, or building projects in the barns. One of his most favorite pastimes was sharing his home with his friends and family over the years; hosting parties, dinners with friends, hunting with his brothers, taking his grandchildren for joy rides on the tractors, and exploring the woods with his nieces and nephews.
He gained wonderful relationships with each new generation of family that entered his life. He loved his family fiercely and grew a circle of close friends over the years that became like family as well. Mark was the rock and patriarch of our family and we will miss him dearly.
Mark attended the former Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis. He went on to begin and own his own company, Burris Engineering in Indianapolis, where he made parts for the power generation and aerospace industries. His company was another huge part of Mark’s life and those he worked with over the years became like a 2nd family to him.
Mark is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca Sink-Burris, of Bloomington, his son, Matthew (Poonam) Burris, of Atlanta, Georgia, his daughter, Lauren (John) Corney, of Castaic, California; three grandchildren, James Corney, Sara Burris, and Arya Burris; three brothers, Steve Burris, Bruce Burris and Ken Burris, all of the Indianapolis area, and three sisters, Linda Cavanaugh, Karen Ferguson, and Marsha Burris, all of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three of his brothers; Larry, Dave, and Phil Burris.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be planned for this summer and will be announced closer to the date.
