Mary Etta Quillen

Mary Etta Quillen, age 92, passed away on September 22, 2026. Born November 21, 1933, in Indiana, Mary was a longtime resident of Bloomington, Indiana. She will be remembered as a beloved and devoted presence—steady in faith, rich in compassion, and marked by a quiet wisdom that guided her family through the years.

Mary dedicated 30 years of work to IU Sugar & Spice bakery. In that daily, faithful labor, she built a legacy of care and consistency—offering not only her time and skill, but also the kind of warmth that people carry with them long after they’ve left the counter.

Mary married Homer Quillen on June 5th, 1953, and were together until his passing in 2000. Together they raised five children: Terry (Patty), Diana, Archie, John (Terri), and Gary (Lori). Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Homer; her children, Terry and Archie; and 1 grandchild, Jared, and 1 great-grandchild, August. She leaves behind 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren—each one a continuation of the family she so lovingly nurtured.

To many, Mary was famous for her cookies—simple, familiar, and made with the kind of care that spoke without needing words. In those small, generous offerings, her faithful heart and compassionate spirit were always present.

Visitation will be held at Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home, 4150 East Third St, Bloomington, IN 47401, on September 26, 2026, from 9:30 am to 11:30 am.

Mary will be laid to rest at Valhalla Memory Gardens, 310 N Johnson Ave., Bloomington.
