Obituary of Michael G. Moore
Michael Glen Moore passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 19th, 2022 at his home in Bloomington, Indiana. He was born to Terry G. Moore and Carole A. Moore in Indianapolis, Indiana on December 19th, 1962. Growing up in a very active and close-knit family, Michael fostered his love of the outdoors through weekly camping trips. Michael spent his formative years involved with Scouting and this experience, especially his time at Ransburg Scout Reservation as a camp counselor, helped foster his passion for mentorship as an adult. After completing his Master’s Degree, Michael dedicated his career to advising and mentoring young people. While he was briefly employed at University of Massachusetts, Amherst, he spent most of his years at Indiana University Bloomington. In February 2011, Michael was diagnosed with cancer and given only months to live. Through his arduous chemotherapy treatments, he defied expectations and lived for another eleven years. The illness kept him from working at IU for a while. He used this time to rediscover himself and do things he had always wanted to do. Some of these experiences included spending a month camping out in the Southern Indiana wilderness; going on a month-long Caribbean Cruise; visiting the Dominican Republic and teaching English through the volunteer group, Outreach 360; working part time at Target to learn about retail sales (and get a discount); volunteered at his beloved childhood camp, Ransburg Scout Reservation; tried various arts and crafts; and took a job at the Paynetown State Recreation Area where he made many new friends. Eventually, he returned to IU to work at the Career Development Center (a job he was deeply passionate about). Michael is survived by his beloved husband of 27 years, Mark Goodner. He is also survived by his parents; two sisters, Dawn (Aaron) Barber and Holly A. Moore; nephews James (Paige) Pearsey, Lucas Michael Barber, and Josh Goodner; a great niece, Marcie Pearsey; his mother and father-in-law, David O. and Billie A. Goodner; a sister-in-law-Merrilee (Michelle) Gehm; a brother-in-law, Mike (Lisa) Goodner; and two dogs, Jake (from State Farm) and Murphy (Brown). He was preceded in death by both sets of his grandparents. Michael loved, FIRST AND FOREMOST, spending time with his family—especially his nieces and nephews. He was a vivacious person, making friends wherever he went. Michael enjoyed amusement parks and riding roller coasters (especially at Cedar Point), camping (especially around Lake Monroe), supporting the students he worked with at his job, reading, traveling (especially to Key West), gardening, watching “Survivor” and “The Amazing Race”, and shopping for a good deal. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, March 26th, 2022 from 1:30 – 5:30 PM at Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home, 4150 E Third St, Bloomington, IN 47401. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the following charities: Outreach 360, Ransburg Scout Reservation, IU Student Emergency Fund, or your local animal shelter. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.DayDeremiahFrye.com for the Moore family.
