We are sad to announce the death of Michael James Sellers on June 27th, 2022. Mike described himself as a “game designer, professor, AI researcher, father and grandfather—not necessarily in that order.” He touched many lives throughout his decades of leadership and service to his family, his church, the video game development industry, and the Indiana University community.
Born on June 29, 1961, Mike attended the International School in Manila, Philippines, and Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. At Lewis & Clark, he discovered a love for cognitive science, and he went on to build his career around artificial intelligence. Over 37 years, he created computer games and virtual worlds, founded multiple companies and shepherded dozens of projects into existence, including the landmark online role playing game, Meridian 59.
In 2014, he came to Indiana University to help found the Game Design program at the Media School. As a Professor of Practice and Director of the program, he imparted his decades of experience to the next generation of game creators. His Advanced Game Design textbook has become a core component of university programs across the country.
Throughout his adult life, Mike was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as an Elder, High Priest, Sunday School teacher, and frequent Boy Scout leader. His commitment to teaching and mentoring informed every aspect of his life.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jo Anna, his six children and their partners, his six grandchildren, and his five siblings and their partners, as well as many other family members, friends, colleagues, and students. He will be greatly missed.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.DayDeremiahFrye.com for the Sellers family.
