With deepest sorrow we announce that Robert Marr, Jr., age 73, beloved husband, brother, uncle and friend died suddenly on November 4th at his home in Bloomington.
Those who knew Robert, even just a little, will remember his kind nature, his warm smile and his engaging personality. An avid dog (and cat) lover, Robert would inevitably have one or more of his dogs with him just about anywhere he would go. Always one to help others, Robert, along with his loving wife, Bonna were full-time caregivers in their home for Robert’s father prior to his death several years ago. Robert was the family “genealogist” and enjoyed tracing our family’s history. He also served as Governor of the Indiana Society of Mayflower Descendants.
A 1966 graduate of North Central High School, Robert attended Indiana University and fell in love with Bloomington and decided to stay there after college. He was drawn to “country living”, and barely out of college he built a geodesic dome on his friend, Warren Henegar’s farm just south of Bloomington. There are quite a few fun and interesting stories surrounding the construction of “the dome” and during the time that Robert lived there!
Being a natural entrepreneur and a lover of fine art, soon after college Robert founded, and operated Pygmalion’s Art Supply located on Grant Street in downtown Bloomington. This became the primary outlet for IU Fine Art students to purchase their supplies. After selling Pygmalion’s several years later, Robert opened Prints for Paupers, an art framing and print shop located in the newly developed Dunkirk Square. Years later, Robert opened and operated a wood stove supply and installation business located in Brown County. Robert and his wife, Bonna were (are) horse lovers, and for many years lived on a 50-acre horse property on the west side of Bloomington where Bonna could teach dressage to her students and Robert could keep and ride his horse too!
Eventually Robert and Bonna decided to move to a home with 5 acres in Carmel, Indiana and later to a home with 11 acres in Sheridan, Indiana. During this time Robert worked in the medical sales industry for 10 years before joining his brother, Danny in commercial real estate leasing and sales at Olympia Partners, LTD in downtown Indianapolis, and later at Veritas Realty in Broad Ripple.
Upon his retirement, Robert and Bonna purchased a lovely 40-acre property on the far west side of Bloomington, which includes a wonderful barn with an indoor riding arena. Always great at building and fixing things, Robert worked long and hard at restoring the property and was putting the finishing touches on their home renovation at the time of his death.
Robert is survived by his wife, Bonna McCuiston Marr, brothers Jeffrey (Susan) and Danny (Debbie) Marr, sister Lesley (James) Dubach, his niece, Kisha Burns and nephew, John Thomas Causey, who lived with Robert and Bonna many years as they were growing up, and many other beloved nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 12:00pm to 2:00pm, with the funeral immediately following on Wednesday, November 10th at Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home, 4150 E 3rd Street, Bloomington, IN 47401.
In lieu of flowers a memorial gift can be made to Indiana Forest Alliance, 615 N. Alabama St., Suite A, Indianapolis, IN 46204, 317-602-3692.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.DayDeremiahFrye.com for the Marr family.
