Obituary of Tamara Marie Carter
Tamara "Tammy" Marie Ramey Carter, daughter of the late James Samuel Ramey and Dorothy Marie Deal Ramey was born September 11, 1959, in Bloomington, Indiana. At an early age she professed her faith in Jesus Christ and became a member of Second Baptist Church of Bloomington, Indiana. During her membership She served GOD first and served as Second Baptist's Church Choir Director, a Trustee, Events Director, and a member of the Benevolence Committee. She was also the Anniversary Angel and Birthday Princess. Every month she honored those members celebrating anniversaries and birthdays with hugs and kisses (candy), paid for out her own pocket as a gift to Second Baptist members. Tammy was a proud graduate of Bloomington High School North and Indiana State University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work. Her love of community and service led her to a career as a Juvenile Probation Officer She helped countless youth improve their lives through her caring nature and quick wit. Tammy loved to laugh, and she shared her humor with children she worked with as well as their families, creating positive working relationships. After 34.5 years of service (July 15,1985 - spring 2020), Tammy retired and is still missed by the staff at the Vigo County Juvenile Justice Center. Committed to social justice and service, Tammy was a life member of the NAACP. She further perpetuated her commitment to service as a member of the Order of Eastern Stars. She was initiated in 1991 through the Queen Esther chapter #5 in Terre Haute, Indiana. The Queen Esther Chapter and the St. Andrews Chapter merged to form what is now Southern Star, Chapter 50. On April 26, 1985, Tammy was initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated through Alpha Eta Omega Chapter in Terre Haute, Indiana. She worked in various capacities including two terms as President of Alpha Eta Omega Chapter, Graduate Advisor to Epsilon XI chapter (Indiana State University). As a graduate advisor, Tammy mentored numerous undergraduate members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Tammy returned to Alpha Eta Omega in 2023 as a keynote speaker for their 95th Chapter Anniversary Celebration. Tammy worked tirelessly under the leadership of the former AKA Central Regional Director, Gisele M. Casanova PhD, to re-engage Sorority members in the Bloomington area to reactivate Kappa Tau Omega Chapter. Following the reactivation (March 4, 2013). Tammy transferred her membership to Kapph Tau Omega Chapter and served as Chapter President for 2 years, and Chapter Host for 7 years. A Silver Star with 39 years of membership. Tammy served on numerous committees supporting the mission and program initiatives of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Now an Ivy Beyond the Wall, her light continues to shine in memory of her love of God, family, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and being of service to all mankind. Tammy departed this life on Friday, May 31, 2024. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William Percy Carter, and her aunt, Betty Newman. Tammy is survived by her loving brothers, Billy (Nana Amoah) Ramey and Shannon (Helen) Ramey, both of Bloomington, Indiana, and Aaron Shawn (Cetrise) Ramey of Elkhart, Indiana. Three nephews, Jordan Ramey of Tennessee, Aaron (Victoria) Ramey Jr. of Indianapolis and Neil Ramey of Bloomington, Indiana. Five nieces, Shauntee'anne Ramey of Elkhart, Indiana and Shanilene Ramey, Lynn Lamptey and Tracey Lamptey, all of Bloomington, Indiana, Daisy (Lawrence) Fianko of Rockville, MD. Four great nephews, Talen and Tristan Ramey of Elkhart, Indiana, Lawrence Fianko Jr and Alexander Fianko of Rockville, MD. One great niece, Aurora Frankie Fianko of Rockville, MD. And a host of treasured cousins, friends, and colleagues. The Home going Service will be held on Saturday, June 15th at 1:00 PM at Second Baptist Church, 321 North Rogers Street with Reverend Dr. Bruce R. Rose officiating. Visitation will be held prior to services from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the church. The AKA Ivy Beyond the Wall Ceremony will take place at 11:30 a.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Day and Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home.
