Jim - beloved father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, mentor and friend - known affectionately as Gramps, Papa, Grampa Jim, Bones, Coach...- passed away peacefully with family by his side at the age of 96 in Bothell, WA.
He was born on May 17, 1929, to Frank Thomas Doherty and Ann Gullekson Doherty in Duluth, MN.
Jim lived a full and vibrant life, marked by a deep love for his wife Sally, family and friends, a passion for teaching and coaching and an enduring faith and commitment to service and inspiring others.
A lifelong educator and coach, Jim dedicated his career to shaping young minds in the classroom and on the basketball court. His impact extended well beyond wins and losses, leaving a legacy in the lives of countless students and athletes.
He had a successful college basketball career at Whitworth College in Spokane, WA and in 1953 was honored to be drafted by the Boston Celtics - a proud achievement that reflected his talent, hard work and determination.
He channeled that passion into decades of coaching, guiding young players with patience, wisdom, and a fierce belief in their potential.
Jim was a cherished husband and father of two daughters- Cam (Rob) Campbell and Shannan (Kent) Lindor. He was a proud grandfather to Scott (Sara), Jay (Renee), Steve (Emily), Todd (Caitlin) Campbell and to Allison, Kristina (Caleb), Kyle (Kylee) Lindor and to five (soon-to-be) six great-grandchildren - Lauren, Madelyn, Drew, Julia, Kade...
His family was the center of his world, and he never wanted to miss an opportunity to cheer them on - in sports, in school and in life.
Jim was a man of kindness, humor, strength and faith. His presence lit up the room and his stories - always vivid and full of heart - will be remembered for years to come.
A celebration of life will be held at Inglewood Golf Club in Kenmore, WA on October 10th at 11:00 AM.
Family and friends are invited to gather in honor of a life well lived and a man deeply loved.
A special thank you to the staff at Woodland Terrace and Evergreen Hospice for their care and support.
