Julia Teresa Wasik Mathewson, age 98, passed away peacefully in her home in Woodinville, Washington, on August 28, 2025. Born in Harrah, Oklahoma, on May 17, 1927, to Polish immigrants Joamme John Wasik and Leocadio Lillian Kupczynski. Julia was the eldest of five daughters and a lifelong example of strength, devotion, and grace.
Raised on a farm, Julia learned the value of hard work early in life - a trait that defined her every endeavor. Her journey took a romantic turn when, as a waitress in Oklahoma City, she met a charming sailor named Harry who borrowed 25 cents to tip her. That small gesture sparked a love story that would span 7 decades.
Julia and Harry married in San Diego in 1946, beginning a life of adventure as a military family. From bases across the country including three years in Cuba, Julia embraced each new chapter with enthusiasm. She was a vibrant presence in every community they joined - an avid bowler, a dedicated volunteer at Catholic schools and churches, and a talented cake decorator who turned her skills into service.
After Harry's retirement from the Navy in 1968, the couple settled in Woodinville, where they built their home and became pillars of the St. Brendan's and St. Teresa of Calcutta's parishes. Julia's devotion to faith and community was evident in everything she did - from cooking for Knights of Columbus events and sewing their vests, to organizing funerals, decorating the church, and helping feed the homeless. She and Harry were honored as Family of the Year multiple times, a testament to their shared generosity and spirit.
Together, they explored the world - from the Panama Canal to the Cape of Good Hope, Africa, and Cape Horn, South America - collecting memories and friendships along the way.
Julia was preceded in death by her beloved husband Harry, and her sisters Rosie, Mary, and Agnes. She is survived by her sister Helen; her children John (Jane) Mathewson, Mary Kinsel-Eubank (Michael), and Linda Beatty; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Julia's legacy is one of love, laughter, and unwavering service. She will be deeply missed by all who had the joy of knowing her.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 12th at 11:00, at Holyrood Catholic Cemetery, 205 NE 205th St, Shoreline, WA.
