Margaret Florence Bridges Jacobsen, 93, passed away October 10, 2019 at the home of her daughter in Sandy, Utah. She was born November 25, 1925 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, the daughter of Charles Glenn and Mildred Florence Skinner Bridges. She graduated from Fair Park High School in Shreveport Louisiana and entered its World War II nurses’ training program. Her training took her to New Orleans where she met and fell in love with a Norwegian born American Naval Officer, Erling Jacobsen who was on his way to the Pacific theatre of war. They were married just 16 days after meeting and reunited in San Diego after the war. They made their home in Seattle, Washington where both Margaret’s and Erling’s families followed them.
Margaret’s nurses training came in handy in caring for many people including her grandfather and all of her five children. It was especially helpful for Janis who suffered from asthma aggravated by allergies and who died at age 20. Her daughter, Elise, also benefited, being born with a rare skin condition requiring constant attention. As her children grew, she was able to complete her training and became a registered nurse in 1974 and a nurse practitioner in 1980.
In order to maintain the flexibility she desired for travel and family events she worked in short term and part time positions at the University of Washington Student Health Center, Manpower Temporary Services, Iliuliuk Family & Health Services, Inc. Unalaska, Alaska, Indian Health Service at Neah Bay, Washington and as a clinical instructor at Seattle Pacific University until she retired to care for her mother.
A devoted disciple of Jesus Christ she dedicated herself with her husband to generosity in time and means, giving unselfishly of her resources and efforts; serving in church callings of all kinds and helping others including family, friends, and neighbors. She and Erling served both at the Seattle Temple and as fulltime missionaries in Erling’s native country, Norway.
Survivors include her sister Marie Fisk (Don), daughter Nancy Whiting (Mark), and sons Charles Jacobsen (Lisa) and “Jake” Erling Jacobsen Jr. (PJ); 18 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Mildred Bridges, her sister Dortha Walsh, her husband Erling Jacobsen, her daughters Janis Jacobsen and Elise Sturgeon (Chris), her grandson Justin Jacobsen, and her great granddaughter Rhiannon Hearn.
