Winifred "Freddy" Jean Weller

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Winifred Jean “Freddy” Weller, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, and friend. Freddy passed away peacefully on July 3, 2026, at the age of 81, surrounded by her husband, David, and her children.

Freddy was born in Memphis, Tennessee, to Colonel Frederick and Janet Thorpe. As an Army child, she lived all over the world but spoke of her time in Ohio, Germany, and Japan before her family eventually settled in Washington, where her father retired on Vashon Island.

Freddy graduated from Lakeside High School before attending the University of Washington, where she earned her bachelor's degree in sociology, later a master's degree in teaching, and was a proud member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority. It was at the University of Washington that she met the love of her life, David Weller, at a college dance. They were married on August 25, 1967, and built a life centered on faith, family, and love.

In 1970, they began raising their family of four children: David "Boomer," Kathryn, Daniel (Lynsey), and Dennis (Angela). Later came one of Freddy's greatest joys—being "Mimi" to her four granddaughters, Harper, Piper, Jordyn and Lucie.

Freddy was an open and welcoming person. She could always find the bright side of life's challenges and smiled brightest whenever she talked about her family. She was the perfect mom and grandmother. The Weller home was the neighborhood gathering place, where kids were always running through the yard, playing games, or simply stopping by because everyone felt welcome.

For more than 30 years, Freddy taught math and science at Ryther and McClure Middle School in Seattle, and before finishing her career at Kenmore Junior High. She believed every child deserved to be seen and cared for. If she knew a student might come to school hungry, she'd quietly pick up extra breakfast on the way to work. Helping others wasn't something she did—it was simply who she was.

Freddy found joy in gardening, baking, drawing, golf, music, and musical theater. She loved family camping trips, summers at Lake Chelan, golfing with David in Pateros, and annual trips to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. Her Southern roots came alive in her cooking, from jambalaya and hush puppies to the pecan pie that became a Thanksgiving tradition.

Freddy was preceded in death by her beloved son, David, and her siblings, Janet and Frosty.

Freddy's legacy is one of compassion, generosity, and unconditional love. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, former students, and the many lives she touched. To know Freddy was to love her. Though the world is a little quieter without Mimi's laugh, her love, kindness, and generous spirit will continue to echo through her family for generations.

A rosary will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 31, 2026, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Brendan Catholic Church in Bothell. A reception will follow, with burial at 2:00 p.m. at Holyrood Cemetery in Shoreline. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Freddy's life following the burial.
